I used to get paid to watch The Drew Barrymore Show (now, that’s camp!). I was a closed captioner, taking raw text files we received from Drew’s live broadcast and turning them into captions for New Zealand’s free-to-air television viewers.
As respite from captioning the horrors of the world on the news every night, The Drew Barrymore Show was, to me at least, an entertainment diamond in the rough. My social media algorithms seemed to catch up, dishing out 30-second clips from her interviews that transfixed me – and evidently, many other doom-scrollers.
What I love about Drew, and the show, is campness.
