Trump's Department of Defense recently revised the military's recognized religious affiliations list, removing hundreds of belief systems ranging from "Atheism" to "Wicca". Although Mormonism remained on the list, it was placed in its own category alongside Judaism and Islam—excluding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from being considered Christian.

The incident illustrates a fact that many right-wing Mormons would rather ignore: They will never be fully accepted by American evangelicals, and attempting to win that approval by joining the MAGA movement is a serious mistake.

The question of who counts as "Christian" is a touchy subject. Mormons absolutely identify as Christian; the church's official logo is a portrait of Christ, and Christ is central to LDS theology. In an attempt to emphasize that, in 2018 the church attempted to replace the term "Mormon" with "members of the Church of Jesus Christ".
